CHARLOTTE, NC – Six drivers from Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway received awards at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) Awards this past weekend.
Ronnie McCarty, Wayne Hale, Kres VanDyke, Danny Casteel, Billy Byington, and John Ketron were all recognized onstage during the annual awards ceremony inside the NASCAR Hall of Fame at the Charlotte Convention Center.
McCarty was awarded the 2016 Kingsport Speedway track championship, while Hale received the 2016 Lonesome Pine Raceway trophy.
Both drivers repeated as track champions, making this their second trip to the awards in two years.
VanDyke received the 2016 NWAAS Tennessee state championship. This past season was VanDyke’s second time taking the state title.
Casteel won the 2016 NWAAS Tennessee state Rookie of the Year. Casteel has raced for nearly 50 years but this was the veteran’s first year behind the wheel of a NWAAS Late Model Stock Car.
Byington and Ketron received awards for finishing in the top five in NWAAS Division III national standings. Byington finishined the season third in national points, while Ketron ranked in fourth place.
“Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway were well-represented at the awards this past Friday,” said Karen Tunnell, general manager and promoter at Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway. “We couldn’t be any prouder of what these drivers accomplished in 2016.
“The recognition that Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway drivers received continues to show how both of these facilities have some of the best competitors locally and nationally.”
Champions and award winners across all divisions from both facilities will be honored at the Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway Awards Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017. The awards banquet will be held at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center in Kingsport.
Both Kingsport Speedway and Lonesome Pine Raceway will be back in action in 2017. Full schedules and season details are set to be released in the near future.
